We, the undersigned, petition the Prime Minister to Simplify the process for obtaining translations of standard documents required for foreign travel.

Persons travelling to France for study, marriage, etc. require a notarised translation of their birth certificate, stamped by the embassy.

This is a complex three step process:

1) Translation of the certificate

2) Verification by a registered solicitor

3) Consular approval.

There are no standardised forms available from consulates etc, who will literally tell you to "look in Yellow Pages"

A recent quote from a firm offering the entire service came to a staggering cost of £143.

We propose a standardised form, or set of forms, which could be issued directly from either the GRO, or Consulates, in the language & correct format for the destination country.

As for translation / notarisation, this is a completely unnecessary part of the process, as the majority of details (name, d.o.b, Mums name, Dads name, address, etc) require no translation & the only detail that does is largely irrelevant (Mum/Dad’s professions) that could mostly be translated from a list, requiring very little skill
